On Friday last week, I touched on the topic of social media, and the idea of taking a break from it. I think that spending less time on our phones, laptops, and social media accounts is one key to feeling more fulfilled in our daily lives. Mindlessly scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr, etc. often causes us to feel like we wasted valuable time and we also feel inadequate when we start comparing ourselves to others’ online versions of themselves.
Today I want to share some ideas for simple pleasures to replace all that time you mindlessly spend on your phone or laptop. These pleasurable pastimes will leave you feeling way more fulfilled than when you rely on your electronic device for entertainment.
Watch a movie.
Making popcorn, slipping into cozy clothes, and snuggling up with your significant other or pet to enjoy an old favorite or new must-see film is a simple pleasure that we sometimes forget about when we spend most evenings staring at our laptop screens. Make sure you put your smartphone down and just enjoy the movie with your full attention!
Go for a walk.
Getting out into nature is refreshing and revitalizing. It’s a good way to get a little exercise in, soak up some vitamin D, and get away from screens. This weather outside has me wanting to bundle up in mittens, a coat, and scarf and wander around in the snowflakes.
Cook or bake.
Getting your hands dirty in the kitchen is really grounding and almost meditative. Share your creation with a loved one for an even more rewarding experience.
Read a book.
This is one of my favorite pastimes, yet I forget to do it when I always have my phone or laptop at the ready. Instead of grabbing your phone first thing in the morning to browse as you sip coffee and wake up, keep a book on your nightstand or coffee table that you can easily reach for and peruse in the morning or throughout your day.
Light candles and drink tea.
There is nothing more relaxing and comforting than candlelight and a warm drink between your palms. Combine this with some relaxing music, a favorite TV show or movie, a chat with a loved one, or time to breathe and just be.
Instead of scrolling the internet as a way to unwind and relax in the evening, roll out your yoga mat and stretch and soothe your body. Doing yoga before bed can even improve your sleep, whereas staring at your smartphone can be detrimental to your sleep cycle.
I hope these ideas inspire you to put down your phone a little more this weekend and enjoy the simple pleasures around you. You will be surprised how much more you can fit into your day when you aren’t constantly reaching for your phone or computer. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend filled with books and coffee and time with loved ones!
